public speaking

Have you ever tried public speaking? Have you ever not done it, because you thought you couldn’t do it? It is a scary thought, isn’t it?

I never wanted to speak in front of a group of people. I was way too worried, that I could say something wrong or not find the words. So, the first time, I had to do it, I did just that. I said things not the way I wanted to say it, my mouth dried out and I was constantly looking for the right words. It was a horrible situation. WAY out of my comfort zone, which was somewhere in the audience in the last row.

The interesting thing is, this was only the way I felt about it. The people that were listening to me, did not feel that way. They actually thought, I did quite well.

We tend to expect too much from ourselves. We want to be like Steve Jobs, when giving a presentation. Charismatic, funny, clever. But we never want to admit any insecurities.

When I learned to accept my insecurities and even addressed them in my speech or presentation, I started being myself. I became so much better in finding the right words and even my mouth was not as dry. Be yourself, get out of your comfort zone, push the limit and be honest! But keep that glass of water close by!

Try it! You will see how it works!
